National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) today spreads about its Annual Press Freedom Report. The report, which consists of 22 pages, presents the violations of press freedom in Somalia from January to December 2005 that NUSOJ monitored, investigated and reported.

This report divulges a summary of 20 cases of killings of journalists, imprisonment of media professionals, suspension of media institution, attacks against media houses, media censorship and many more terror attacks against media community. The report states massive violations of press freedom according to previous years.

The annual report exposes the killings of two female journalists in Mogadishu as the major cases of violations of freedom of press in Somalia in the year 2005.

The violations happened in almost every major town in Somalia, from Borame to Bossasso, from Garowe to Jowhar and from Mogadishu to Kismayo. The perpetrators of these violations were not brought before the justice, although some of them call themselves as the enforcers of justice in self-declared regional administrations.

“Violations of press freedom have been far from easy in the year 2005” said Mohammed Barre Haji, Chairman of NUSOJ’s supreme council.

The Annual Press Freedom Report reveals the cases chronologically. “I would like to thank the 25 PFPs (Press Freedom Protectors) for their meticulous and spirited work of reporting the violations accurately and promptly” said Mohammed Barre.
