Brussels - The International News Safety Institute has appointed Victor Redmond Batario, Executive Director of the Center for Community Journalism and Development in the Philippines, as its representative for South-East Asia. Batario, known as "Red", is one of the most prominent journalists in the region. He has been a journalist for 30 years, working for newspapers such as the Daily Express, Veritas Newsmagazine, Manila Chronicle, Philippine Daily Inquirer and the Manila Times as editor, columnist and contributor. Through the Center, a not-for-profit organisation, he conducts lectures and workshops on public journalism in the Philippines and South-East Asia. He is devoted to helping create safer conditions for news media staff throughout the region. Batario will be at the centre of INSI's safety information network for South-East Asia, and will work with INSI's Head Office in Brussels on safety training projects for journalists throughout the region. The Philippines currently is the second most deadly place in the world for journalists, after Iraq. INSI, with the financial support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), has established regional offices in the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, South Asia and now South-East Asia.
