New York, November 27 - The International News Safety Institute, the only global organization solely dedicated to the safety of journalists and other news professionals, has formally established a presence in the United States.
The non-profit institute now has charitable status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code which enables INSI to raise money free of tax and and for donors to set their contributions against tax.
This is a major move forward for INSI as it depends entirely on donations for its work to help journalists covering all kinds of dangerous stories, from wars to crime and corruption to natural disasters.
And it comes as the death toll for news media staff around the world climbs to record levels. Last year was the worst on record with 168 deaths; this year so far the toll stands at 168, according to INSI's count, which can be accessed on www.newssafety.com
INSI was created in 2003 by a unique coalition of news organizations, journalist support groups and concerned individuals alarmed by the ever-rising numbers of colleagues dying while trying to tell the story.
In the most comprehensive survey of its kind, INSI counted 1,000 news media dead in 10 years from 1996 to mid-2006. More than 200 others have died since then, with the yearly tolls rising steadily since the year 2000.
Shockingly, the majority of the dead fell not in war but in peacetime, murdered as they tried to cover crime and corruption in their own countries. And nine out of 10 of their killers were never brought to justice.
INSI believes there can be no press freedom or sustainable development where journalists are killed because of their work. Reporting conflicts and other hazardous stories can never be completely safe, but professional training and education make it safer and improve the quantity and quality of free flow of information around the world.
Uniquely, INSI is a dedicated source of safety information and advice for journalists in, or planning to visit, danger areas. It also raises money to provide safety training free of charge for news media staff in the developing world who have no resources to pay for their own. It has so far provided training for 730 journalists and support staff in 16 countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia.
INSI's work also includes campaigning on behalf of journalists in danger zones. It worked with members to persuade the UN Security Council to pass Resolution 1738 last December on the safety of journalists in conflict and negotiated with the British military to include journalist safety for the first time in its media-military wartime operations manual.
Although INSI is based in Brussels, it is international in scope and enjoys the support of almost 100 news organisations around the world, including most of the global broadcasting networks and agencies, journalist unions and journalist support groups as well as individuals. Major support organisations such as the International Press Institute, the International Federation of Journalists, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the World Association of Newspapers and others come together under INSI's safety umbrella.
"We are thrilled to have a formal charitable status in the USA and look forward to strengthening our membership," said INSI Honorary President Chris Cramer, former head of CNN International.
"Having a proper presence in the United States is vital to our work," said INSI Director Rodney Pinder. "The demand for our help constantly exceeds our financial and human resources. The news industry in the United States is big, powerful and rich in resources and friends of journalists there can now rally behind the safety cause in the most efficient and effective way."
INSI will operate as a program of the non-profit Foundation of the American federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), an INSI member.
