News Safety Alert - Gaza and Lebanon

24 November 2006

Gaza Strip

Following the kidnapping for the two Italian Red Cross workers, who were released after 8 hours, journalists should beware of going to the Khan Younis area. Most of the kidnappings have happened there.

Journalists should exercise maximum care by informing local and international colleagues of details of their travel plans, and by contacting the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate in Gaza to check before going to any part of the territory.

Lebanon

Following the assassination of Pierre Gemayel, the situation in Lebanon is really dangerous and journalists should be aware of that. Nobody can predict what might happen in coming days.

As a general rule, journalists should maintain constant contact with local as well as international colleagues to keep abreast of developments and keep friends and colleagues informed of travel plans. Avoid travelling alone - try to move around with other journalists. For contact details and other safety advice for Lebanon go to http://www.newssafety.com/hotspots/countries/lebanonx.htm
