IRAQ - Insurgents are believed to be infiltrating the security forces. They wear uniforms and man road blocks and conduct house searches. There is increasing danger an Iraqi "official" is not who he appears to be. Local journalists are ever more subject to attack, especially near their homes. Some working for international organisations are being moved to safe houses. News coverage continues to shrink because of the dangers to local and international journalists and support staff. WORLD SOCCER CUP: Safety-wise news organisations are making provisional plans to protect news teams if violence erupts between rival fans in Germany. They are stocking up on discreet anti-stab vests that can be worn invisibly beneath ordinary clothes, hardened baseball-type caps for protection against flying stones and bottles and less-conspicuous mini-DV cameras. Some are retaining security companies for advice. The best guidance is the same as for any rioting in which journalists themselves may turn into targets for the mob -- keep a low profile, wear sensible protective clothing -- and plan your exit route in advance.
