The following request has come to INSI from Australian psychologist Cait McMahon MAPS:
SURVEY:
Has work as a journalist traumatised you or a colleague?
Would you like to contribute to knowledge of how journalists are affected by trauma in their work?
Cait McMahon writes:
"I am a counselling psychologist in Melbourne, Australia, who is undertaking a comprehensive study of journalists, cameramen and photographers to determine how they cope with the trauma experienced in reporting. Recently my research into journalists and trauma has been reported in 'The Australian' newspaper and advertised in 'The Walkley' magazine.
"You, your colleagues and your news agency are invited to participate in this important research by filling out an on-line survey. This research is for ALL modes of journalism and will contribute to enhancing the wellbeing of journalists who cover potentially traumatic stories all over the world. Trauma can sometimes be manifested through sleepless nights, often dreaming or thinking about the event and being a bit more jumpy than usual - just to name a few.
"I am also interested in how well you have managed after covering trauma including the positives that can come from negative experiences.
"Please invest 30 minutes of your time to complete this international survey. Your experience is valuable. You can contribute to this research by following this link to:
www.journotrauma.cjb.net Please make this a worthwhile study by being involved, and forwarding this link to colleagues you think would be interested. If you have any specific questions please mail me on: caitm@optushome.com.au
"Thanks for your assistance."
