
![]() News director of Suriyan FM Nadaraja Guruparan was released by his abductors mid night 29th August 2006. He was abducted on his way to work from his home, south of Colombo early morning 29th August 2006. Journalists organisations and civil society activists held a lunch hour picketing campaign on the same day demanding his immediate release. International journalists and press freedom organisations issued statements condemning the abduction and emphasising the government duty in ensuring journalist's safety. The government of Sri Lanka and political parties too condemned the abduction and demanded his immediate release. Electronic media in Sri Lanka played a vital role in getting him released by covering the abduction and campaign for his release throughout the day.
