Sri Lankan security forces' release condemns abductions of journalists

Text of report by the TamilNet website on 3 September

The Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) in a press release issued on 2 September 2006 condemned abductions of journalists. The full text of the press release follows:

Mysterious abductions of journalists condemned:

The Media Centre for National Security vehemently condemns the mysterious abduction of journalists and media personnel in the country. Two media personnel were mysteriously abducted and released during the recent past.

It is believed that these actions could have been perpetrated by interested parties to discredit the government and to tarnish the image of the security forces and police. The security forces do not get involved in such activities as harassment of media personnel is a blatant violation of human rights and threat to media freedom.

Security forces and police requests the general public to assist them in their investigations by providing any information that could help unearth the truth behind these mysterious abductions.
