Mortar shell fired near Gaza border crossing

JERUSALEM, Jan 2, 2007 (AFP) - Palestinian militants in Gaza fired a mortar shell into Israel, damaging a truck at the Karni border crossing in the latest breach of a month-old ceasefire, the army said Tuesday.

The truck was transporting construction material into the coastal strip when it was damaged by the blast, it said. No one was wounded.

The shell marked the latest breach of a November 26 ceasefire between militants and the army, under which Israel withdrew its troops from Gaza and militants were supposed to cease firing rockets.

Since then, more than 60 rockets have been fired into the Jewish state, and one Palestinian was killed and at least three wounded by Israeli fire in the coastal strip.
